OXVA vaping, my notes on clicks, the lock and the settings

A pod often has a single button. Yet that button handles switching on, wattage, the lock and sometimes the heating mode. At OXVA, the brand behind the XLIM, NeXLIM and VPRIME, shop listings spell out the battery and the pod, rarely how to operate the thing. Putting the manufacturer’s pages next to published reviews of the OXVA vaping range, one detail struck me as worth a notebook page. The same gesture does not do the same job from one model to the next.

OXVA vaping, the short answer on the controls

Every device in the OXVA vaping line-up described by listings and reviews fires when you draw, with nothing to press. On the models that have a button, five quick presses within two seconds switch the device on or off, and three presses open the wattage setting.

The fourth press is the one that catches people out. On the XLIM Pro, four presses lock the button. On the VPRIME 2, those same four clicks change the heating mode, and locking is done with a side slider.

One last point to keep in mind, on the XLIM Pro, the only model for which a published review spells it out, the lock does not switch off auto-draw. It blocks the button, not the inhale. To stop a device firing altogether, you have to turn it off.

Auto-draw or button, getting an OXVA device going

Before counting clicks, it helps to split the range in two. Some models have no fire button at all, others have one that doubles as trigger and menu. The start-up logic is not the same.

Buttonless models, one gesture only

The NeXLIM Go is the clearest example. A UK review describes it as an auto-draw system you simply puff on once the pod is filled. A retailer also lists it among the models with no power-on step. Its only switch is there to pick between Eco and Boost.

On this kind of device there is no sequence to remember and no lock to watch. The trade-off is simple, the device stays ready to fire as long as a pod is fitted.

Single button models, five presses to switch on

On the XLIM Pro and the VPRIME, the button is optional for vaping, since drawing is enough. It mostly works as a menu. Five presses within two seconds switch the device on or off, a sequence shared by the VPRIME 2, the XLIM Pro and even the small XLIM C.

Locking an OXVA vaping device, what the padlock really blocks

The lock is the most searched control, and the most misunderstood. It comes in two forms across the range, and neither does what most people assume.

Four presses on the XLIM Pro

On the XLIM Pro and XLIM Pro 3, four quick presses lock the button, and four more release it. The information appears at a retailer and in a UK review of the XLIM Pro. That same review notes that the screen then shows a closed padlock, and above all that auto-draw keeps working once the button is locked.

So the padlock guards against an accidental press in a pocket, not against a draw on the mouthpiece. To put an OXVA device away with no risk of it firing, switching off with five presses remains the control to use.

The VPRIME 2 slider and its automatic lock

The VPRIME 2 drops the sequence in favour of a switch, the “Slide Lock Switch”, which locks the fire button. The manufacturer’s page adds a behaviour I have not seen on any shop listing, the lock also engages by itself after three accidental presses.

On this model, the four clicks serve another purpose. Anyone moving from an XLIM Pro to a VPRIME 2 who repeats the gesture learnt for locking ends up flipping between Eco and Boost without meaning to.

Setting wattage and the Eco or Boost modes

Once the device is on, two settings shape the vapour. Wattage on one side, the heating mode on the other, which not every model offers.

Three presses for wattage

Three presses open the wattage setting on the button models, each further press stepping it up. Ranges differ clearly by format, from 5 to 30 W on the XLIM Pro, 5 to 40 W on the NeXLIM 2 and 5 to 60 W on the VPRIME 2.

The sensible approach is to start at the bottom of the range given for the pod, then step up gradually. A higher resistance in ohms generally calls for a lower wattage.

Eco or Boost, two ways to run the same pod

On the NeXLIM 2, OXVA sums up the choice in two phrases. Boost aims for denser vapour, Eco for a smoother vape and a pod that lasts longer. According to the brand’s own published testing, a 4 ml pod lasts for roughly 80 ml of e-liquid in Boost and 120 ml in Eco.

In the UK, refillable pods for nicotine e-liquid are capped at 2 ml and nicotine e-liquid at 20 mg/ml in 10 ml bottles, and OXVA does list a 2 ml TPD version. The ratio between the two modes is the only figure that carries over.

Airflow and screen, the two settings left

After the button, two features round off the handling of an OXVA vaping model. They need no sequence, but they change the draw and how you read the device.

Airflow is set on the side. The NeXLIM 2 offers three positions, tight, medium and loose, from mouth to lung to a restricted direct lung draw, while the VPRIME 2 has a stepless control. If the difference between those draws is still hazy, I went through it in my piece on how to inhale a vape.

The screen, finally, acts as a dashboard. The VPRIME 2 display measures 0.98 inch and shows wattage, battery and the active mode, while the NeXLIM 2 screen measures 0.85 inch. On the smaller XLIM Pro, the screen is mostly there to check the wattage and the state of the padlock.

FAQ

A few questions keep coming up under retailer listings and in searches about these controls.

What does “auto-draw” mean on an OXVA listing?

It means firing on the inhale. A sensor picks up the draw on the mouthpiece and starts heating, with no button press. OXVA quotes a firing time of 0.01 seconds for the VPRIME 2.

Why won’t my OXVA switch on?

On a button model, the five presses have to fit within two seconds. If that fails, the battery may be flat, the pod may not be seated properly, or the device may already be on and simply locked.

How do you reset the puff counter?

On the VPRIME 2, it takes seven clicks on the button. The sequence varies between models, and each device’s manual remains the reference.

Should I pick a draw-activated OXVA or one with a screen?

A buttonless model such as the NeXLIM Go keeps things to a single gesture. A screen model adds wattage control and a visible padlock, at the cost of a few sequences to learn.

How long does a VPRIME 2 take to charge?

OXVA quotes 50% battery in 20 minutes, over USB-C at 5 V and 3 A. The time for a full charge is not given by the brand.

OXVA vaping, learn the model’s gesture first

Behind a range that looks uniform, each device has its own grammar. Five presses switch on almost everywhere, three open the wattage, but the fourth locks an XLIM Pro and changes mode on a VPRIME 2. As for the XLIM Pro padlock, it does not stop the inhale.

Before taking up an OXVA vaping device, reading the sequence for that exact model avoids surprises, starting with a padlock you think is protecting you. It is a reading habit that works for plenty of pods beyond this brand, as the questions to ask when choosing a vape show.
